Mark Rose, President

Building Science Specialist | Building Technologist

As a building science specialist and a construction expert, he brings over 25 years of technical experience to Certa’s projects and is a leading expert in the evaluation, design and repair of failed building envelope assemblies. Before starting his consulting career in Vancouver, Canada, Mark specialized in the rehabilitation of building envelope systems as a general contractor. During that time, he oversaw the repair of numerous distressed buildings and developed cutting-edge techniques in building envelope design and construction.

Justin Barnhart, Reserve Specialist

Building Science Specialist | CEI, LEED, AP, RS

Justin Barnhart is a Building Science Consultant with over 10 years’ experience as industry leading Reserve Study provider. Justin has obtained the Reserve Study Provider (RS) designation from the Community Association Institute (CAI) with his building science background a cornerstone of his practice. He is able to provide superior guidance for short and long-term reserve planning and provided budget forecasting for hundreds of community associations, numerous market rate properties, and many affordable multi-family housing projects, and state-owned facilities throughout the region.

Jim Riley, Director of Architecture

Architect | AIA, NCARB | Building Science Specialist

Jim (James) Riley is Certa’s Director of Architecture and leads our Seattle office. With active projects in Washington, Oregon, and Florida, Jim engages directly with owners, contractors, owner’s representatives, Architects, Jurisdiction Authorities, and designers on a wide range of projects. He works closely with each to deliver high-quality, cost-effective projects that meet the most stringent of standards and expectations. With his strong management skills and commitment to design excellence, Jim consistently exceeds expectations on the most challenging of projects. Jim is a licensed Architect in Oregon, Washington, Utah, and Florida, and has been practicing since 2000.

Dan Rundle, Director of New Construction

Architect | NCARB, RRC, RWC | Building Science Specialist

Dan is a registered architect in Washington, Oregon, and Florida and has provided a multitude of services over his 18 years of industry experience, focusing on enclosure design and construction-defect remediation. He is an active member of the IIBEC and a voting member on several ASTM committees. Dan holds the Registered Roof Consultant (RRC), Registered Waterproofing Consultant (RWC), and Registered Roof Observer (RRO) designations through IIBEC. He has been recognized by his peers as a leader in the building sciences through the design, construction, and post-occupancy phases of his projects.

Rob LoPiccolo, Building Science Consultant

Rob is a Building Science Consultant with over ten years of building enclosure consulting experience. Rob is skilled at providing expertise and technical support throughout the lifecycle of a project. He has performed hundreds of diagnostic building investigations as well as managed rehabilitation projects including single family homes, large and small commercial properties, and industrial buildings. Rob is a Certified AAMA Installation Master.

Roman Lechner, Building Science Consultant


Roman is a Building Science Consultant who has been practicing building science in the Pacific Northwest since 2016. Originally from Austria, he has the unique ability to apply his gained working knowledge from both the North American as well as the European building industry, which allows him to deliver high-performing and long-lasting building enclosures for our clients. He is experienced in providing building enclosure design services for new construction projects, building commissioning (BECx), property condition assessments. Roman excels in developing innovative rehabilitation and repair strategies. Roman is a CSI-certified Construction Document Technologist, ITC Level 1 Certified Infrared Thermographer, as well as a SPRAT Level 1 Certified Rope Access Technician.

Derek Buchanan, Building Science Consultant

Since 2014, Derek has been engaged in building construction and consultation of a wide variety of projects ranging from net-zero, custom single-family homes to major stadium renovations in the Puget Sound region. With his ability to work through complex project issues, draw on his construction experience and utilize his excellent communication skills, Derek consistently provides technically sound and practical solutions to our clients. Derek is currently a Building Science Consultant in our Orlando office focused on the Florida rehabilitation market.
Anson Chen

Anson Chen, Building Science Consultant

Building Science Engineer | BASc, P.E. (OR), CPHC®

Originally from Vancouver, Canada, Anson has been providing building envelope consultation services throughout the Pacific Northwest since 2016. As a licensed engineer, she brings her extensive knowledge of how buildings function and her depth of experience to each of her new construction and existing building projects. Anson believes in combining a drive to achieve successful results, technical expertise, and a thorough understanding of project needs in order to deliver timely and practical solutions to our clients. Anson is a Certified Passive House Consultant (CPHC) through the Passive House Institute.

Adam Di Placido, Building Science Consultant

Building Science Engineer | MASc, P.E. (WA), CPHC®

Originally from Toronto, Ontario, Adam has been actively engaged with new and existing construction projects throughout the Pacific Northwest since 2015. With projects of varying size, complexity, and delivery models, Adam has consulted on an incredibly wide range of enclosure systems for a variety of building typologies including commercial, large-scale residential, and specialty construction projects.
As a licensed engineer and Certified Passive House Consultant (CPHC®), Adam uses his professional experience and analytical skills to perform Certa’s energy code compliance analysis and translate required efficiency standards, or the more stringent voluntary energy efficiency standards like Passive House, into creative construction solutions.
Adam has been an industry leader, making numerous contributions to building science research, and has co-authored several publications and guidelines focused on designing and building durable and energy-efficient enclosures.

BK Choi, Building Science Consultant

A Seattle native, BK is an experienced Building Science Consultant who has been practicing architecture and building science in the Pacific Northwest since 2015. BK’s design expertise includes complete building enclosure construction document sets, as well as permitting for addition/ remodel/ rehabilitation projects. He is also experienced in the construction administration of new construction and existing buildings, including building enclosure condition assessments (BECA) of in-service building wall assemblies and identifying failure mechanisms within, as well as providing a wide range of envelope design, repair, and consultation services to HOAs, architects, contractors, and developers.

Stephanie Savalli, Building Science Consultant

M. Arch | NCARB

Stephanie has worked in architecture design, project management, and construction administration in the state of Florida since 2005. During that time, Stephanie worked alongside multiple award-winning architects. She recently relocated to the Pacific Northwest, bringing with her a passion for integrating quality form and responsible, sustainable function. Moreover, Stephanie’s background in business administration enables her to evaluate form and function in the broader context of clients’ competing interests of schedule and budget considerations.
Joe Cordes

Joe Cordes, Building Science Consultant

Joe is a Building Science Consultant with 10 years of history in construction. Joe has worked on a number of various projects ranging from single family homes, rehabilitations, and townhouse or condominium reclads to new construction of downtown high-rises and convention centers. Utilizing his experience from drafting, field performance testing, construction administration, and project management, Joe brings his skills to support any project and team with their building envelope needs. Applying his background in architecture and construction, Joe provides sound building envelope design with practical problem solving for complex issues.

Liz McKenzie, Accounts Specialist


Originally from the UK, Liz brings with her over 25 years of Executive Administration experience. She has a proven track record in executive, management and financial support. Liz is also a certified member of the NACPB.
